Open Source with Microsoft Azure: only pay for your Cloud IT based on Consumption

Microsoft Cloud Germany is now offering to business customers the opportunity to use Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and other open source vendors as a pay-as-you-go payment model. In this article, you will learn about the most important facts about Open Source from the Azure Cloud, and you will immediately secure for your IT boss a test access with 170 Euro starting balance.

If you look at current megatrends in the IT, which are “en vogue” (eg blockchain, micro-service architectures, server-less architectures, big data, Internet-of-Things (IoT)) you can determine Technologies based on OpenSource projects. It is right to say: innovation happens where OpenSource is.

This subject is addressed to:

  • Enterprises that want to transfer Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other open source vendors into the public cloud to pay only after use.
  • CEOs / managers who want to achieve savings and flexibility in their cloud infrastructure.
  • CIOs and CTOs, which are interested in innovative app and application development on a highly scalable container solution such as Red Hat OpenShift.

The new Microsoft (since the beginning of the “Nadella” era) has become a very powerful driver and innovator of OpenSource software. Market positions such as “Microsoft loves Linux” or product developments such as “Microsoft SQL on Linux” would not have been conceivable in the past. Today, Microsoft Corporation is making the strongest contribution to the OpenSource scene, next to companies like Facebook, Google and Intel.

Microsoft has identified Open Source as a central driver

In the OpenSource world, Red Hat has already played a leading role for many years: More than 90% of all Fortune 500 companies already rely on RHEL as a strategic component of the IT infrastructure. With Red Hat Cloud Access and Microsoft Azure, enterprise customers can easily take their subscriptions to RHEL virtual machine images with other open source vendors from On-Premise to their own cloud.

The support includes the following solutions from Microsoft Partner Red Hat:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or RHEL, is the market-leading Linux distribution with pay-as-you-go model and it is supported as an enterprise operating system by a large number of software vendors. Customers worldwide appreciate the high lifecycle with up to 13 years of service life.
  • The Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is a PaaS or a platform-as-a-service solution that not only provides secure Linux containers for corporate agile software development but also orchestration.
  • Red Hat Gluster Storage is known as open-ended software-defined storage solutions and scale-out NAS for modern enterprise workloads. The storage can be provided on-premise as well as in the private, public or hybrid cloud as well as within a Linux container.
  • The Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and the Red Hat JBoss Web Server enable the fast, secure deployment of apps in the private, public or hybrid cloud, as well as on-premise on the customer’s existing IT infrastructure.

The collaboration between Red Hat and Microsoft is very far-reaching and also affects common support structures. Microsoft Azure Germany offers on the German Azure marketplace RHEL Subscriptions via Red Hat Cloud Access as well as the possibility of the Pay As You-Go model with prerecorded subscription. The hosting is secured in German data centers, the billing is accurate and cashes up only after the actual use, even if the servers are not or only partly loaded.

The support includes all RHEL-based cloud standard products, including container solutions, storage and application servers for Linux users, and the usual Azure stack for a large number of Azure services for Windows and other operating systems.

Hosting in Germany

The hosting in the Federal Republic also means that even strictly regulated industry companies such as financial institutions and insurance companies can put their data and innovative app development for future growth into the public cloud without worrying about their high flexibility and scalability.

The pay-as-you-go model, which is not bound up with a contract, saves company customers not only money but also time. Customers are informed of price changes at least 30 days in advance.

For those who want to test these or other services and solutions, Microsoft Azure Deutschland offers a 30-day test account with any combination and an attractive start-up credit of 170 euros. The exclusive offer is valid throughout the EU and EFTA (including Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) and does not involve hidden costs. As long as no subscription is completed, no charges will be charged to the customer.

Recognition: Be clever and use Azure VM instances if needed and you will save money. Lot of money. And if you do so, you will always be cheaper with the on-demand variant.
