MWC Barcelona – Microsoft presents the Future of Virtual Reality

On February the 24th, 2019 Microsoft presented the new HoloLens 2 for the first time at a press conference within the MWC Barcelona and with it its focus on Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge technologies.

Featuring more than twice the field of view and significantly improved wearing comfort, the HoloLens 2 allows more intuitive and easier interaction with holograms than its predecessor. During the course of this year, the innovative mixed-reality glasses will be available in the USA, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Australia & New Zealand.

Interested customers can already pre-order the Microsoft HoloLens 2 here at a price of 3,500 US dollars.

Improved Technology

Since the introduction of HoloLens in 2016, Microsoft has fundamentally changed the way people work by using mixed reality technology in a wide variety of companies and industries.

With the introduction of HoloLens 2, Microsoft is now building on the advantages of the predecessor model and has further developed the mixed-reality glasses in three core areas on the basis of customer feedback:

Wearing comfort: The HoloLens 2 has a more balanced centre of gravity, making it comfortable to wear, even over long periods of use. The use of carbon fibres makes it lighter overall than its predecessor. The glasses adapt to any head shape when worn and the “Dial-in-Fit” system provides a comfortable wearing experience, even while wearing over glasses. The visor can be folded up and thus guarantees a change from mixed to physical reality within seconds.

Immersion: Holograms look even more realistic with the new HoloLens 2. The newly developed “Time-of-Flight” depth sensor, built-in artificial intelligence and an integrated semantic analysis make handling holograms as intuitive as handling objects in the physical world.

Operational readiness: Microsoft is continuously developing its mixed reality partner system. Existing programs such as Dynamics 365 Remote Assist or Dynamics 365 Layout as well as new applications such as Dynamics 365 Guides offer companies a wide range of services for a diverse range of industries and scenarios.

In addition to HoloLens 2, further innovations were also presented at the MWC in Barcelona, which are attributable to the cross-product collaboration of different Microsoft teams from the areas of Azure, HoloLens, Dynamics 365 and Microsoft Devices.
