Or les batteries lithium-ion, aujourd\u2019hui majoritairement utilis\u00e9es, sont tr\u00e8s gourmandes en ressources naturelles et co\u00fbteuses \u00e0 produire. La recherche sur les batteries explore donc activement des alternatives. Un nouveau candidat prometteur : le sel de cuisine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Les d\u00e9tracteurs de la mobilit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique avancent souvent l\u2019argument selon lequel une voiture \u00e9lectrique ne devient \u00e9cologiquement plus avantageuse qu\u2019un v\u00e9hicule thermique qu\u2019apr\u00e8s environ 90 000 kilom\u00e8tres parcourus  &#8211;  la fabrication de ses batteries \u00e9tant particuli\u00e8rement \u00e9nergivore et n\u00e9faste pour l\u2019environnement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pourtant, le r\u00e9chauffement climatique, marqu\u00e9 par une hausse continue des temp\u00e9ratures moyennes, exige une sortie progressive des combustibles et carburants fossiles. C\u2019est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la Chine  &#8211;  g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement per\u00e7ue comme tr\u00e8s favorable aux industries manufacturi\u00e8res  &#8211;  qui m\u00e8ne ici la danse, acc\u00e9l\u00e9rant sa transition \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique sous la pression croissante du smog dans ses grandes villes et zones urbaines dens\u00e9ment peupl\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est pourquoi la recherche internationale sur les batteries s\u2019attelle, avec une intensit\u00e9 accrue, \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper de nouveaux syst\u00e8mes de stockage d\u2019\u00e9nergie et des accumulateurs rechargeables. La plupart des technologies \u00e9tudi\u00e9es reposent encore sur la technologie lithium-ion. Celle-ci pr\u00e9sente toutefois un inconv\u00e9nient majeur : les mati\u00e8res premi\u00e8res qu\u2019elle requiert  &#8211;  notamment le lithium et le cobalt  &#8211;  ont un fort impact environnemental, sont difficiles \u00e0 extraire et deviennent de plus en plus rares. Les batteries sodium-ion apparaissent ainsi comme une alternative porteuse d\u2019espoir. Comme le sodium se trouve couramment sous forme de chlorure de sodium (sel de cuisine), on peut dire, sans exag\u00e9rer, que le sel pourrait bien \u00eatre la solution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Le projet collaboratif \u00ab Transition \u00bb, financ\u00e9 \u00e0 hauteur de 1,5 million d\u2019euros par le minist\u00e8re f\u00e9d\u00e9ral allemand de l\u2019\u00c9ducation et de la Recherche (BMBF) afin de promouvoir un stockage d\u2019\u00e9nergie plus durable, travaille  &#8211;  <a href=\"https:\/\/analytica.de\/de\/muenchen\/presse\/trendberichte\/batterieforschung\/\">selon la r\u00e9daction<\/a> du salon Analytica de Munich  &#8211;  \u00e0 des alternatives aux batteries lithium-ion classiques, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 la mise au point de nouveaux mat\u00e9riaux et d\u2019\u00e9lectrolytes destin\u00e9s aux batteries sodium-ion de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Une batterie imprim\u00e9e au jet d\u2019encre<\/h2>\n<p>Le projet r\u00e9unit l\u2019institut Helmholtz d\u2019Ulm (HIU), le Centre de recherche sur l\u2019\u00e9nergie solaire et l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne du Bade-Wurtemberg (ZSW) et l\u2019universit\u00e9 Friedrich-Schiller de I\u00e9na, couramment d\u00e9sign\u00e9e par son sigle FSU. Selon le professeur docteur S. Ulrich Schubert, du Centre de chimie \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique et environnementale de la FSU, son \u00e9quipe a \u00ab pour la premi\u00e8re fois pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 une batterie en couche mince fabriqu\u00e9e par impression jet d\u2019encre \u00bb. Ce r\u00e9sultat repose sur des recherches approfondies, lanc\u00e9es d\u00e8s 2011, portant sur les polym\u00e8res comme mat\u00e9riaux actifs  &#8211;  travaux brevet\u00e9s par son \u00e9quipe. \u00ab La soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Forma Evonik Industries AG s\u2019appr\u00eate \u00e0 commercialiser ces nouveaux polym\u00e8res sous forme d\u2019encres imprimables \u00bb, ajoute le professeur. Ces batteries sans m\u00e9taux lourds visent \u00e0 \u00eatre plus durables, plus respectueuses de l\u2019environnement, moins co\u00fbteuses, tout en offrant des performances tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9es. Parmi leurs applications potentielles, le professeur Schubert cite notamment les \u00e9tiquettes RFID, les \u00ab pansements intelligents \u00bb destin\u00e9s \u00e0 transmettre des donn\u00e9es biom\u00e9dicales ou encore les v\u00eatements connect\u00e9s. Les batteries \u00e0 base de plastique utilisant des polym\u00e8res comme mat\u00e9riaux actifs devraient pr\u00e9senter de nombreux avantages par rapport aux accumulateurs lithium-ion classiques : leur fabrication g\u00e9n\u00e8re un bilan carbone nettement inf\u00e9rieur ; leurs composants sont nettement moins toxiques et inflammables ; enfin, ils peuvent \u00eatre mis en \u0153uvre directement par des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s d\u2019impression.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019impact \u00e9cologique et \u00e9conomique favorable de ces nouvelles batteries ne se limite pas \u00e0 la phase de production : il s\u2019\u00e9tend \u00e9galement \u00e0 leur utilisation, \u00e0 leur fin de vie et \u00e0 leur recyclage. L\u2019absence totale de m\u00e9taux lourds renforce par ailleurs consid\u00e9rablement leur caract\u00e8re durable.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px;\">Les batteries sodium-ion renoncent aux m\u00e9taux lourds<\/h2>\n<p>Le prototype de batterie sodium-ion d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 dans le cadre du projet collaboratif Transition utilise, selon la revue sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9e, un charbon dur \u00e0 base de biomasse comme anode, associ\u00e9 \u00e0 un liant aqueux et \u00e0 de l\u2019aluminium comme collecteur de courant ; la cathode, quant \u00e0 elle, est compos\u00e9e d\u2019oxydes de m\u00e9taux de transition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dans le domaine de la mobilit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrique, les batteries sodium-ion ne remplaceront pas les accumulateurs lithium-ion, mais ne pourront dans un premier temps que les compl\u00e9ter, selon les chercheurs. Parall\u00e8lement, la recherche sur les batteries accorde \u00e9galement un fort potentiel \u00e0 la technologie de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne, notamment lorsqu\u2019on prend en compte divers aspects de s\u00e9curit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Des m\u00e9thodes d\u2019analyse innovantes s\u2019av\u00e9reront indispensables pour d\u00e9terminer pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la composition des \u00e9lectrolytes et des autres composants. Une infographie pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e lors de l\u2019Analytica 2020 illustre les avantages des batteries sodium-ion par rapport aux batteries lithium-ion, notamment gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ces nouvelles techniques d\u2019analyse. Ainsi, la cathode ne contient pas d\u2019oxyde m\u00e9tallique de lithium, mais un oxyde de m\u00e9tal de transition plus facile \u00e0 produire.
