Avec ses 8,5 gigawattheures annonc\u00e9s, ce syst\u00e8me disposera d\u2019une capacit\u00e9 \u00e9quivalente \u00e0 environ la moiti\u00e9 de celle de l\u2019ensemble des installations de stockage par batteries d\u00e9j\u00e0 install\u00e9es en Allemagne. Selon les m\u00e9dias t3n et heise online, son volume de stockage d\u00e9passera m\u00eame de trente fois celui du plus grand parc allemand pr\u00e9vu \u00e0 Alfeld an der Leine, pr\u00e8s de Hildesheim.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mais la v\u00e9ritable innovation du nouveau syst\u00e8me de stockage, con\u00e7u par la start-up Form Energy, bas\u00e9e dans le Massachusetts, r\u00e9side dans son principe de fonctionnement : il n\u2019utilise ni lithium co\u00fbteux ni mat\u00e9riaux aux impacts \u00e9cologiques controvers\u00e9s, mais de l\u2019air et du fer  &#8211;  autrement dit, de la rouille. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment, l\u2019\u00e9lectrode m\u00e9tallique, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u00e9charg\u00e9, est constitu\u00e9e d\u2019hydroxyde ferreux Fe(OH)<sub>2<\/sub>. Lors des cycles de charge et de d\u00e9charge, des ions hydroxyde se forment et migrent vers l\u2019eau, puis traversent une membrane jusqu\u2019\u00e0 une \u00e9lectrode \u00e0 air, o\u00f9 l\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne se combine \u00e0 nouveau avec ces ions hydroxyde pour lib\u00e9rer des \u00e9lectrons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bien que le concept de \u00ab batterie \u00e0 rouille \u00bb, imagin\u00e9 d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1960, semble simple en apparence, sa mise en \u0153uvre soul\u00e8ve plusieurs d\u00e9fis techniques. L\u2019un d\u2019eux consiste \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser les interactions entre substances solides, liquides et gazeuses.
