Con sus mencionados 8,5 gigavatios-hora, su capacidad equivale aproximadamente a la mitad de la suma total de todos los sistemas instalados hasta la fecha en Alemania. Seg\u00fan informan t3n y heise online, su volumen de almacenamiento ser\u00e1 incluso treinta veces superior al del mayor parque de bater\u00edas previsto en territorio alem\u00e1n: el que se construir\u00e1 en Alfeld an der Leine, cerca de Hildesheim.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pero lo realmente innovador del nuevo sistema de almacenamiento, desarrollado por la startup Form Energy con sede en Massachusetts, es que no emplea litio  &#8211; un material costoso y con importantes implicaciones medioambientales &#8211; , sino aire y hierro, o m\u00e1s concretamente \u00f3xido de hierro (\u00f3xido f\u00e9rrico). En concreto, el electrodo met\u00e1lico en estado descargado est\u00e1 compuesto por hidr\u00f3xido de hierro Fe(OH)<sub>2<\/sub>. Durante las fases de carga y descarga se generan iones hidr\u00f3xido que pasan al agua, atraviesan una membrana hasta un electrodo de aire, donde el ox\u00edgeno se combina nuevamente con dichos iones para liberar electrones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la idea de la \u00abbater\u00eda de \u00f3xido de hierro\u00bb, concebida ya en los a\u00f1os sesenta, parece sencilla, plantea varios desaf\u00edos t\u00e9cnicos. Uno de ellos es gestionar adecuadamente la interacci\u00f3n entre sustancias s\u00f3lidas, l\u00edquidas y gaseosas.
