US market research institutes like IDC and Gartner carry significant weight in the IT world. Gartner has now outlined ten trend predictions for 2025. Half of these, as depicted here, have direct or indirect ties to AI.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the annual IT Symposium\/XPO in Orlando, Florida, Gartner presented ten central IT technology trends at the end of October 2024 that companies should prepare for in 2025 and the years to come.<\/p>\n

Of particular interest is the development towards neurological enhancement, as Elon Musk aims to achieve with Neuralink. Similarly, post-quantum cryptography, which must meet much higher standards than today’s common asymmetric encryption to defend against quantum computer attacks, is also noteworthy. However, most of Gartner’s ten predictions revolve around artificial intelligence, with half of them being quite direct.<\/p>\n

1. Agentic AI – agent-based AI<\/h2>\n

According to Gartner Vice President Gene Alvarez, these are AI-enhanced software components designed to perform tasks and achieve specific outcomes. Gartner predicts that these will account for at least 15 percent of daily work decisions by 2028.<\/p>\n

Currently, they are hardly integrated into AI assistants, software, SaaS platforms, IoT devices, or robots. However, many startups are already positioning themselves as platform developers. Even hyperscalers are beginning to enhance their AI assistants with Agentic AI.<\/p>\n

As Alvarez explains, Agentic AI will create a virtual workforce to alleviate human labor and boost productivity across the entire organization. His colleague Tom Coshow, Senior Director of Analytics, writes in his report: “While you sleep, AI agents could examine five systems in your company, analyze more data than you ever could, and make the necessary decisions.”<\/p>\n

2. AI Governance Platforms<\/h2>\n

Gartner defined the four pillars of AI trust and security management under AI TRiSM in 2023 to manage or better mitigate risks. Gartner now sees AI governance platforms as part of these strategies. According to Gartner, organizations that adopt these platforms will experience around 40 percent fewer ethical conflicts by 2028 compared to those that do not.<\/p>\n

3. Protection Against Disinformation<\/h2>\n

AI also plays a significant role in the third trend identified by Gartner. “The widespread availability and advanced state of AI and machine learning, which can be used for malicious purposes, is expected to increase the number of cases of disinformation directed against companies,” warns Alvarez. “If this is not controlled, disinformation can cause significant and lasting damage to any company.”<\/p>\n

Gartner predicts that half of the companies will introduce products, services, or features to combat disinformation over the next four years. Currently, this figure is less than 4 percent.<\/p>\n

4. Energy-Efficient Data Processing<\/h2>\n

Given the growing CO2<\/sub> footprint of compute-intensive applications like AI and streaming, energy-efficient data processing is expected to become even more important in the future. Today, many efforts in the field of green computing already focus on new, energy-efficient hardware, architectures, codes, and algorithms.<\/p>\n

In the future, according to Gartner, even more advanced technologies will be available to make data processing even more energy-efficient, including those still in development. Gartner predicts that by the end of the 2020s, optical, neuromorphic systems, and novel AI accelerators, which consume significantly less energy, will be available.<\/p>\n

5. Polyfunctional Robots<\/h2>\n

Until now, robots have mostly been designed to perform a single task. However, in Berlin, a project in the mid-1980s aimed to create robots capable of building more than one type of vehicle. Polyfunctional robots are designed not only to perform a single task or task but also to be used collaboratively in settings like care facilities. Gartner predicts that by 2030, about 80 percent of people will interact with intelligent robots on a daily basis. This is a sharp increase from the less than 10 percent who currently own a vacuum or cleaning robot, for example.<\/p>\n
