More than ten million households already have access to their own fiber network, says Deutsche Telekom. Far fewer are actually connected. Providers in other EU countries are therefore already signing DSL contracts to force potential fiber customers into their broadband offerings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The majority of Germans still surf and stream over copper\u2011based DSL connections. According to the federal government\u2019s plans, which align with EU targets, all households and businesses should have access to fast fiber by 2030.<\/p>\n

Deutsche Telekom has now announced a first major milestone on that path. By the end of 2024, 10.1\u202fmillion German households already had access to its own fiber network \u2013 2.2\u202fmillion more than in 2023, as ChannelPartner reports<\/a>. \u201cWe are rolling out fiber as fast as we can,\u201d the trade magazine quotes Telekom CEO Tim H\u00f6ttges as saying.<\/p>\n

Most connections sit idle<\/h2>\n

The possibility of joining Telekom\u2019s fiber network and actually using it is still far from uniform. The numbers quoted by Telekom refer to \u201cHomes Passed\u201d \u2013 the cables that are already in the ground, many of which are still waiting to reach a house or apartment.<\/p>\n
