According to Neuralink, output runs with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/neuralink\/status\/2100993363403063404\">Grok Voice from SpaceXAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Terry\u2019s wife says in the video that her husband had just become a partner in his firm. Because of the speech disorder he could barely communicate with clients and colleagues anymore. He finally went onto long-term disability and ended his career. In the closing scene she sees the words he is thinking appear on screen and hears him say \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a brain-computer interface?<\/strong> A brain-computer interface is an implant that picks up signals from the brain and makes them usable for computers. In speech applications it sits in the speech motor area, the region that controls the movements for speaking. According to the registry, it began on October 3, 2025; six participants are planned. The sole study site is the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas; the principal investigator is Nader Pouratian.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">As primary endpoints, the registry lists safety measures only, namely the share of participants with device-related and procedure-related adverse events after twelve months. Speech performance, measured in correctly recognized words per minute, is a secondary endpoint. In May 2025, Neuralink received FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/updates\/neuralink-receives-breakthrough-device-designation-for-speech\/\">Breakthrough Device designation<\/a> for restoring communication in severe speech impairment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">In late January 2026, Neuralink named conversational speed of 140 words per minute as the goal of the VOICE study (<a href=\"https:\/\/neuralink.com\/updates\/two-years-of-telepathy\/\">on the company site<\/a>). At the same time, the company reported 21 participants in its studies worldwide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">Clinical metrics such as accuracy, vocabulary size, or latency have not yet been published by Neuralink for the VOICE study, and Terry\u2019s implantation date is also unknown (<a href=\"https:\/\/teslanorth.com\/2026\/09\/19\/neuralink-terry-voice-trial-grok-voice\/\">according to Tesla North<\/a>). Below the video, Neuralink notes that the devices are investigational and are not approved by the FDA or other authorities.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px\">Long-term data from other research groups<\/h2>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">In mid-June 2026, the UC Davis research group published results in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-026-04414-6\">Nature Medicine<\/a>. An ALS patient used his speech implant at home for just under two years and more than 3,800 hours, with no researchers present. According to the clinic, the participant is Casey Harrell (<a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/news\/headlines\/brain-computer-interface-enables-independent-accurate-communication-for-man-living-with-als\/2026\/06\">on the clinic website<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">On average, Harrell reaches 56 words per minute. When he attempts to speak, the system decodes his speech with more than 99 percent word accuracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">On September 14, 2026, Paradromics reported real-time communication via its own Connexus implant (<a href=\"https:\/\/paradromics.com\/news\/paradromics-achieves-real-time-speech-connexus-brain-computer-interface\/\">at Paradromics<\/a>). The first participant, a woman in her sixties from Michigan with a progressive motor neuron disease, used the system for speech and text communication in real time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">Researchers at Stanford Medicine were already able to decode inner speech from the motor cortex in August 2025, that is, words that are only thought and not spoken. At the same time, they developed a password system that blocks any decoding of inner speech until the user first thinks a password (<a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2025\/08\/brain-computer-interface.html\">at Stanford Medicine<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">In the related Cell study, the word error rate for real-time decoding of inner speech with a vocabulary of 125,000 words ranged from 26 to 54 percent (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12360486\/\">in the study<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:64px;margin-bottom:20px;padding-top:16px\">Rules for neural data<\/h2>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">In early November 2025, UNESCO member states adopted the first global recommendation on the ethics of neurotechnology (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/ethics-neurotechnology-unesco-adopts-first-global-standard-cutting-edge-technology\">at UNESCO<\/a>). UNESCO warns that neural data could reveal thoughts, feelings and reactions and be shared without consent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">At the end of September 2025, the MIND Act was introduced in the US Senate to task the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) with an inquiry into how neural data is handled (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/2925\">in Congress<\/a>). About 2,000 new diagnoses are added each year (<a href=\"https:\/\/als-charite.de\/amyotrophe-lateralsklerose-ursachen-symptome\/\">at the ALS Center at Charit\u00e9<\/a>). In 30 to 40 percent of those affected, symptoms begin with speaking and swallowing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">With INTRECOM, an EU project is developing an implant meant to capture what a person with speech loss wants to say (<a href=\"https:\/\/intrecom.eu\/\">at INTRECOM<\/a>). The clinical study is planned at UMC Utrecht and at University Hospital Graz; so far, UMC Utrecht is seeking participants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height:1.8\">For Terry\u2019s wife, being able to communicate again means the world, as she says in the video. Whether the film becomes a therapy that also reaches people with ALS in Germany hinges on data covering accuracy, long-term safety and the protection of brain signals.
